The Covid 19 pandemic has continued its spread in India, during the spread of Covid 19 and the lockdown, many people have lost their jobs and suffering for the basic necessities like food and ration for survival in the vulnerable community. Many people became socially and financially backward community, in this majority of them are working as daily wage laborers.
In response to the pandemic and requirement of food in such vulnerable community Manasa- SICHREM took initiative in 8 districts of Karnataka to distribute about 442 Ration Kits along with Sanitary items to the community. Specially, to the people who lost their jobs during the lockdown, such as Auto rickshaw drivers, daily laborers, vulnerable community like single mothers and children, elderly, widowed families, disabled families and families affected by Covid 19 and people living on the streets, temples, beggars, railway stations and migrant workers.
Each Ration kit included items like Rice, wheat flour, Sooji, pulses, cooking oil, masala powders, clothes and sanitary items worth Rs. 1000 and for few people food items like Bread and cooked food were also distributed in the 8 districts of Karnataka.
In total 442 Food/ ration Kits has been distributed to financially backward and vulnerable people. Many families who are daily wage laborers, single bread earning family members, people who lost jobs due to Covid, elders and homeless people benefited from this relief work. Specially, families affected by Covid and facing problems with neighbors and socially discriminated people due to stigma, for instance people who were not even allowed to buy milk from the local dairy and many more.
On the other hand, the Covid wave has hit the people very hard, restrictions, lockdown by the government and with lot of obstacles the Staff of SICHREM and District Coordinators with lot of courage and commitment following the Covid protocols reached the deserving families in supporting them all ways possible is much appreciated.
People’s Response:
In this current situation, families facing the hardships responded that they were not reached or no support was given to them. This distribution was a life line for them and is very thankful at this time for the support provided by Manasa- SICHREM in reaching them at the right time during the unexpected Pandemic lock down.
